Dear Mum,
Just a few more lines to let you know how things
are going over here.
Have moved again since I
wrote to you last & we are now on a ‘drome where I wouldn’t mind stopping
for quite a few months. Around the edge of the ‘drome are thousands of palm
trees & underneath these there is grass about a foot deep & on this we
have pitched our tent.
A couple of months ago we would have given anything for a few gallons of water but now we have more than we can use. We dug a hole about seven feet deep & three feet in diameter just outside our tent & from this we can draw all the water we need for washing.
All around the ‘drome the
wogs have been farming & so fresh vegetables are no longer a problem. I went
to the vegetables market in Tripoli last time I was on leave & had a look
around. The vegetables were very good indeed but the only fruit to be had was
oranges & lemons. I bought a big bag of oranges & brought them home
with me & now I have a good drink before I go to bed.
We now get a potato bag full of peanuts every time the truck goes for rations but the trouble is they are not roasted so we shell them & roast them over our primus.
We had a squadron concert last night that was organized by our padre. There were several items played on Stork’s piano accordion but, I am glad to say, Stork did not play them because, although he plays much better than he did when he first bought the instrument, he is still a bit hard on the ears. Some of the Free French fellows from near-by came over & gave us an item or two & the whole show was a great success.
That’s all for now but will
write again shortly. Much love to Dad & Betty & my regards to Leo
Lovingly Yours
Frank
